Is Mindset Really a Thing?

If you’re a coach or counselor, you’re probably like, duh, of course it is! Well, I have a question for you. Is your mindset strong for your own business? Oooo, did that sting a little?

If you’re new here, “Hi, I’m Leska!” I’m a Christ-follower, Type A, Enneagram 1, wife, mom, and have a love of structure, planning, web design, and financial budgeting. A little over a year ago, I heard the voice of God tell me loud and clear that He wanted me to quit my paying position with a church because He had different plans for me (Really? Aren’t I already doing your work?!). Please re-read the second sentence of this paragraph to understand why this messed me up and made me think that Morgan Freeman was hiding in my house and blurting out random phrases in his booming and commanding voice!

Well, here I am, over a year later and I’m still working to be obedient to His calling. Since July of 2024, I’ve filed for a business name, researched all the things that come with starting a business, built a website, joined a coaching bootcamp, re-designed my website, took a web design course, re-designed my website again, and now I’m writing my first-ever blog (I know my friends are thinking “you always say you hate writing”). Is it because the web design course taught me it will help with Google rankings? Nope. It goes back to mindset.

I finally feel like I have all the business structure in place (for now), but I started doubting my ability to actually do the work after some proposals I submitted weren’t accepted. Even though I’ve been doing this work for over 20 years, I started telling myself I wasn’t good enough to do it without the support of an organization writing my paycheck. Why? I finally realized it was my mindset. So, I first went to the Lord in prayer and asked him to help me. Then, through His provision, I started to notice that at every turn there was something telling me to hang in there – a sermon, a podcast, a song, a devotional, a kind word from a friend. I also found an app that sends me random affirmations throughout my workday to keep me going. Wanna hear something funny? I just got one as I was writing that says, “No matter how hard it is, I can do it.”

So, where is your mindset? Have you done the coach training but haven’t reached out to someone who might need you in their life? Do you not think you’re ready yet because you just need to get through this challenging season? What if you started thinking from a place of abundance rather than a place of scarcity? That’s why this blog is finally happening today. I listened to a podcast about this very thing this morning, and it’s what finally pushed me to put my fingers on the keys. I am so fortunate to have an abundant life. I can worship freely, live in a warm home, eat nourishing food, have a computer and a platform to talk to you. I started this wild ride to serve others so that they could in turn do the ministry to which they are called.

Take some time today to focus on a positive mindset. I would love to hear your comments and any other advice you have on how I can keep the momentum going in this area. Plus, you might just give me an idea for the next blog. I’ll be back soon to share something that I pray will fill you with hope!

Blessings,
Leska
